Kimberly O'Brien

Senior Manager of Evaluation Operations, Military Spouse

Western Governors University

Kim O'Brien is an experienced leader with expertise in strategic communication, knowledge management, and business operations. With a background that spans higher education and the Department of Defense, Kim is an Air Force veteran and military spouse of 21 years.

Kim is currently a Senior Manager of Evaluation Operations at Western Governors University, where she leads continuous improvement, data analytics, project management, and change management initiatives. Additionally, she served as an Associate Faculty Instructor at the University of Arizona Global Campus from 2011 to 2023, where she taught courses in Educational Technology and History. Recognized with the Outstanding Achievement in Teaching Award in 2017, she has contributed as a speaker and author at conferences focused on teaching and learning.

Earlier in her career, Kim served in roles such as an administrative coordinator at U.S. Southern Command, where she oversaw records management, security, and travel administration. During her military career, she was an Information Manager in the United States Air Force from 2000 to 2005, managing the lifecycle of records and ensuring compliance with military and federal regulations.

Kim holds a Master of Education in Learning and Technology and a Master of Arts in Global History. Her Bachelor of Arts is in Communication Studies, and she earned her Community College of the Air Force Associate of Science degree in Information Management. She is certified in data analytics, change management, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.Outside of her professional career, Kim is an award-winning artist and volunteers as the PTA National Art Reflections Program Chair, where she leads program operations and competition events.

Travis D. M. Dozier

Graduate Student, Higher Education Administration

Florida International University

Travis is a U.S. Army Combat Veteran who's originally from West Georgia/East Alabama-but now calls South Florida home. He has a knack and passion for collaboration and negotiation. For example, he teamed up with higher education professionals, military actors, and veterans to enhance support for student veterans. Travis' efforts resulted in the creation of the FIU Inaugural Graduating Veterans Recognition Ceremony for Fall Semester 2018. He is a lifelong learner and has earned two Associates Degrees: Applied Technology with Central Texas College and Supply Chain Management with Coastline Community College. Furthermore, Travis is a graduate of the Honors College at Florida International University with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, to include two undergraduate certificates: Afro-Latino Studies and Human Rights/Political Transitions. Travis completed a rigorous and highly selective certificate program called Tuck Next Step Transition to Business at Dartmouth College. Currently, he is a graduate student pursuing a Master of Science degree in Higher Education Administration, to include a graduate certificate in African and African Diaspora Studies. Travis has 8 years of experience, working in higher education with the following institutions and organizations: Florida International University, Miami Dade College, Summerfuel at Tufts University, Warrior Scholar Project, John Hopkins University, and Brown University. Moreover, he is a substitute teacher for grades K-12 with Miami-Dade County public schools. Travis loves cooking, fine dining, napping, reading, and traveling.

Cory L. Baker

Ph.D. Student, History

Liberty University

Cory retired as a Colonel from the United States Air Force in December 2024, after serving 22 years as a Medical Service Corps officer. He was a two-time medical support squadron commander at Travis Air Force Base, California, and RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom. He later returned to RAF Lakenheath as the hospital commander before finishing his career at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, as the Medical Support Division Chief at Air Mobility Command headquarters. Cory also served in Germany, Greenland, the Pentagon, and he had a deployment in Qatar. He is an in-residence Air War College graduate where he earned a Master of Strategic Studies degree. Cory also holds Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Public Administration from Missouri State University. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in History with Liberty University. He and his wife Jennifer reside in the Missouri Ozarks with their four children.

Meaghan Gargin

Online Adjunct Instructor, Military Spouse

Meaghan Gargin is a military spouse who earned her Doctor of Education from Liberty University. She also holds a Master of Science in nutrition and a Master of Public Health, and she is a certified registered dietitian. Meaghan is passionate about online education and has experience as both an online student and an online educator for undergraduate and graduate public health courses. Additionally, she has experience in higher education academic support services. Meaghan volunteers for the New Mexico Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Mark McKinney

Graduate Student, Business Analytics and Digital Marketing

Mark A. McKinney, Ed.D. currently serves as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs & Retention Services for the East Campus of Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) in the Tampa Bay Florida area. Dr. McKinney has over 25 years of service in healthcare administration, higher education, emergency management and strategic planning. Dr. McKinney served eighteen as a healthcare administration, operations, planning and information technology officer for the U.S. Army prior to his retirement in 2014. Dr. McKinney has experience with healthcare information technology along with Lean Six Sigma. Dr. McKinney received his doctorate from the University of New England and has eight information technology certifications. Dr. McKinney is a Fellow of the HBCU Executive Leadership Institute at Clark Atlanta University; graduate of the Walter Bumpus Leadership Institute; and with the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC), he completed the Next Level Leadership, Florida College Professional, and Certified College Professional programs, and is the immediate past President of the Pasco Hernando State College Chapter of AFC, Vice President of the AFC Faculty Commission, and Secretary of the AFC Career & Professional Employees Commission. Dr. McKinney serves on the Patient-Centered Education & Research Institute National Board; Professional Development National Board for the Health Information Management System Society (HIMSS); and Board of Adjustment for the City of Temple Terrace, Florida. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., the America College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the Health Information Management System Society (HIMSS) and the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA). He is a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM), and Meritorious Unit Commendation for his combat service with the U.S. Army and the ACHE Service Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Stephen Onley

Graduate Student, Philosophy and Education

Columbia University

Stephen Onley, a former paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, served in the US Army from 2008 to 2015. His service took him to Afghanistan in 2009, where he worked alongside various special operations groups and foreign militaries. Today, Stephen is the Assistant Director of the Veterans Resource & Outreach Center at Hudson Valley Community College, providing support and guidance to fellow veterans and ensuring they receive the resources they deserve.

In his personal time, Stephen is dedicated to giving back to the community. He volunteers his time training service dogs and organizing adaptive sports activities for veterans and children with disabilities.Beyond his professional and volunteer commitments, Stephen is a devoted single father to a 13-year-old daughter who is currently attending La Salle Institute. Together, they enjoy training for softball, playing with their two dogs, and traveling. This balance of service, work, and family encapsulates Stephen's commitment to his community, his country, and his loved ones.

Denisse Jover

Assistant Director of Employer Relations

As a first-generation Latina graduate and military-connected family member, she understands firsthand the trials that these intersecting identities hold and how they empower her to share a unique perspective in the world of higher education. With extensive experience working in a wide-range of collegiate and community-based programs, she has spent over a decade supporting students on their path to higher education and elevating their career and personal development. Currently she serves as the Assistant Director of Employer Relations at Pomona College. She graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with an option in Social Work. Upon concluding her Master of Science of Higher Education program at California State University, Fullerton, community building and leading through authenticity have been a top priority for her to further model the importance of personal and professional well-being among students, colleagues, and community members.

Christie Burton

Christie Burton holds a doctorate from The George Washington University and practiced HR in the military and later in private industry. As a faculty member, she enjoys teaching students and exploring research interests that include the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), organizational culture and veterans' economic, work-life and family issues.

Esteban Aguilar

Esteban is a military veteran with over 15 years of experience. He currently serves part-time as an Infantry Company First Sergeant and full-time as a law enforcement officer. He is a lifelong learner and has earned an associate degree in sociology, a bachelor's degree in sociology, a master's degree in organizational leadership, and an executive certificate in public administration. He is currently a PhD candidate in the public administration program under the Helms School of Government (HSOG) at Liberty University, Virginia. Esteban is committed to being a role model and serving military veterans seeking guidance in transitioning from military service to higher education.

Joanna Fagan

University of Texas at Tyler

Joanna Fagan grew up in sunny Clearwater, Florida. She received a degree in Psychology from the University of Central Florida and later served in the US Air Force for several years. Joanna is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Texas at Tyler in their Clinical Psychology PhD program. Her interests involve counseling and studying veteran and military members' mental health issues, how disorders like PTSD, anxiety, and depression affect transitions after deployments, trauma, and experiences of grief.

Leigh Britton

Associate Director of Admissions MBA/MS Business Analytics Programs

University of Georgia

Leigh Britton grew up in Mobile, AL and currently resides in Athens, GA where she serves as an Associate Director of Admissions for the Full-Time MBA/MS Business Analytics programs at the University of Georgia. Leigh is a seasoned higher education professional serving multiple intuitions across 3 different states in a span of 12+ years. Her expertise lies in collaborating and prioritizing relationships with prospects and students to ensure a great experience throughout each process. She has also worked extensively with diverse populations to include the military population when she moved around with her husband serving the U.S. Army. She has two children, Emma (7) and Matthew (2) and loves to spend her spare time traveling with her family, hiking the North Georgia trails, and volunteering at her children's' schools.

Leigh received her BA in Communications from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL and her M.Ed. from the University of Georgia focusing on education policy and law.

Bobbi Cumpston

Bobbi is a retired Army veteran with a heart for veterans and a passion for leadership. While serving on active duty with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Bobbi's assignments included Supply, Logistics and Training. Her awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Army Good Conduct Medal. While on Active Duty, Bobbi earned a bachelor's degree in Information Technology and a master's degree in Organizational Management. She is currently working on her Doctorate in Strategic Leadership at Regent University. Bobbi's mission is to honor veterans and provide teaching and insight into leadership through articles, books, and speaking engagements.

Michel Christian Escudié

Doctoral Candidate

Walden University

Mike "Scud" Escudié served in more than 30 countries during his 25 years in the U.S. Air Force. His last assignment as a colonel was in The Pentagon. Since then, he has consulted with Fortune 500 companies, such as Northwest Mutual, on how to best acculturate and acclimate veterans in the workplace. Mike has taught MBA courses and his doctoral dissertation, which he expects to complete in 2023, focuses on best practices when onboarding veterans.

Bryon Garner

PhD Candidate

Union Institute & University

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Bryon L. Garner earned his Master of Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University and is currently completing his PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies at the Union Institute & University. Bryon served as Guest Editor for a special edition on patriotism of the Journal of Veteran Studies and has presented and written about the intersection of race, masculinity and patriotic identity. He was an outstanding awardee at the AGLSP 2020 annual conference where he presented, "Her Brave Black Soldiers: Black Veterans, Patriotism, and the Soldier-Athlete Archetype." Bryon was the subject of a Christian Science Monitor article "On Independence Day, Black Americans see hope of a larger patriotism"

Edmund Kennedy

Bachelor of Arts in History

Amherst College

After spending 5½ years in the United States Marine Corps, Edmund began his journey in higher education at Palomar Community College in San Diego, California. Following his time there, he continued his studies at Amherst College, where he is currently a senior history major. Upon graduation from Amherst College, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in American History or Global/Transnational History. He maintains a solid connection to the military community and continues to advocate for veterans and their needs throughout higher education.

Qunnette McCoy

Doctoral Candidate

Liberty University

Qunnette McCoy has over 18 years of military experience, currently serving as an active-duty legal administrator. In her current position as the senior legal administrator at the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning, she manages all aspects of law office management operations. Qunnette holds a master's degree in business administration and professional certifications in resiliency training, knowledge management, and force management. She is currently enrolled in a Doctor of Business Administration program with an expected graduation date in May 2024. Qunnette is also an adjunct instructor for several warrant officer primary military education courses at The Judge Advocate General's Legal School and Center in Charlottesville, VA. Her varied assignment history has allowed her to support soldiers in family law matters and assist commanders in interpreting military justice and national security law guidance. Qunnette was selected to join the first cohort of fellows for HigherEdMilitary in April 2022. As a student for most of her military career, Qunnette is intimately familiar with the challenges soldiers face in funding their education, allotting time for their studies, and balancing academic endeavors with frequent change of station moves.

Danica Spriggs

Danica Spriggs is an Instructor in the Leadership and Professional Development Program for East Carolina University, College of Business. She teaches the Freshman course, BUSI 1200 Strategy First in traditional and virtual formats. Prior to entering academia, Danica served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 2016 as a Senior Master Sergeant, First Sergeant. She received her master's degree in Management and Leadership and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Strategic Leadership from Liberty University. Danica and her husband, Fulton, currently own and operate multiple small business franchises in Eastern North Carolina.

Regan Sweeney

Bachelor of Science in International Affairs and Psychology

George Washington University

After graduating from George Washington University with a Bachelor of Science in International Affairs and Psychology, Regan Sweeney now works as a Health Science Technician for a study looking at brain function among veterans at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in The Bronx, NY. She worked in GW Military and Veteran Services Office for four years where she gained an extensive understanding of VA educational benefits, as well as how to plan and implement holistic well-being initiatives on campus. Additionally, Regan interned for the Uniformed Services University contributing to studies among the military-affiliated population. Raised in an Air Force family, Regan hopes to continue supporting service members and their families throughout her career.
