Position Summary The successful candidate will direct the Upward Bound Program (UB) at Binghamton University. Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program that supports access to higher education for lower income and first generation students. The TRIO UB Director is under general supervision of the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students at Binghamton University. Upward Bound is a department within the Division of Student Affairs. Duties and Responsibilities A. Essential Duties
  • Management/Leadership: Provide leadership, supervision, direction and coordination for the University's Upward Bound Programs. Manage budgets; hire, train and supervise staff; oversee recruitment and selection of participants; while maintaining communication with schools, community agencies and university offices.
  • Document/Correspondence Preparation: Prepare grant proposals; submit reports as required by the United States Department of Education and Binghamton University offices; develop, document and submit goals and objectives for use by the Division of Student Affairs. Supervise the development and delivery of communications and correspondence to participants, families and constituencies.
  • Assessment Functions: Develop and conduct annual assessments of UB including the evaluation of participants and program effectiveness. Develop and complete participation, satisfaction, and needs assessments each grant cycle.
  • Technology: Implement a structured approach to acquiring and utilizing technology within the UB Programs. Includes website development and revision according to Binghamton University guidelines, computer replacement plan, cell phone use policy, training staff on the appropriate use of technology software, hardware, and policies. Create innovative approaches for student interaction with program staff by maximizing the use of existing technologies.
  • Risk Management: Work with the appropriate Binghamton University offices to promote campus safety and accident prevention through policies and procedures. Minimize legal and ethical liabilities and protect University property and assets.
  • Programming/Activity Coordination: Work with Program Staff to develop, implement, and assess program activities designed to aid UB student participants in their academic, career, and personal growth development.
  • Ensure personnel and vendors meet the requirements of the Child Protection Policy
B. Other Duties
  • University Committees - Participate on University and external committees that promote and enhance UB effectiveness and visibility on campus and within the community.
  • Speaking Engagements - Represent the Binghamton University, Division of Student Affairs, Upward Bound, or TRIO Programs in general at various local, regional, state, or national events.
  • Travel to professional development activities within the state of New York and elsewhere is expected.
  • Other duties as assigned that may enhance professional effectiveness yet not be primary to this position.
Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Education, Management, Counseling, or an Academic area is required.
  • Minimum of five years full-time experience in program management serving first-generation and/or low-income students
  • Experience must include supervision of staff, budget administration, and program evaluation.
Must be able to:
  • Effectively plan, implement and supervise staff and activities.
  • Advocate for students who are first-generation and/or low-income
  • Effectively counsel and advise students
  • Communicate effectively (verbal and written)
  • Assess and report on program outcomes
  • Work evening and weekend hours as needed, especially during summer programs
  • Work independently, manage several projects, and meet deadlines
  • Must have a working knowledge of MS Office and database management; web site maintenance experience desirable
  • Knowledge of the academic setting and college financial aid process beneficial
