Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Academic Computing Consultant for the Sciences is an educational technologist who works in collaboration with members of the faculty, the library, and the IT staff to plan for, provide and support the growing need for academic technologies in the sciences.

The successful candidate will be a member of a team of Academic Computing Consultants, who...
  • identify opportunities for the use of educational technologies;
  • take initiative to seek out and share up-to-date knowledge about educational technology across the disciplines;
  • provide expertise with multimedia and instructional development tools;
  • advise and collaborate with faculty members, colleagues and students in the design and implementation of instructional and research projects;
  • offer training, documentation, and general computing support to faculty; and
  • recommend appropriate hardware and software to meet academic needs.
Additionally, the Academic Computing Consultant for the Sciences is expected to maintain and share expertise in math/science applications of technology, including scientific visualization technologies; to provide technical support to the Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI); and to manage the 30-computer Scientific Visualization Lab. Lab duties include providing system administration of Windows and Linux servers; maintaining hardware; installing software; supporting faculty and students using the lab; and troubleshooting sophisticated hardware and software problems in this and other science labs. The possibility of teaching a college course exists, as appropriate.

The Academic Computing Consultant for the Sciences will also provide expertise and assistance in accessing and using high-performance computing (HPC) resources for academic researchers.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree in a math/science field is preferred. Experience in teaching or as an educational technology professional is a plus.
  • Experience with Macintosh and Windows hardware and software used in academic settings. Some knowledge of Linux is a plus, as is knowledge of software used in math and science disciplines, such as Mathematica, MatLab, and statistical analysis tools, especially R.
  • Self-motivated, with a keen sense of responsibility and flexibility.
  • Excellent technical skills are essential, as are strong oral and written communications skills, the ability to manage projects involving student employees and work effectively in time-constrained situations, and to partner with faculty members on collaborative projects. The Academic Computing Consultant for the Sciences is expected to actively track emerging trends in pedagogy and technology and keep up to date through professional development activities.
