Essential Job Duties:
Join our Landscape Maintenance and Operations team as a Landscape Construction Technician, where you'll play a vital role in building, repairing, and enhancing the campus environment. We are seeking a physically capable and effective communicator for a position that involves working at heights, including on university rooftops and climbing ladders.
Essential requirements also include the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing, following instructions from supervisors and interacting professionally with the general public.

Key responsibilities and duties include but not limited to:

  • Perform a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks, including structural layup masonry and brick/block repair
  • Build and repair retaining walls, stairs, and other hardscape features
  • Evaluate project needs and prepare accurate bills of materials
  • Execute journey-level concrete finishing and asphalt repair
  • Install trees, shrubs, mulch, and soil amendments to support healthy landscapes
  • Apply above- and below-grade waterproofing, including caulking, expansion joint control, and membrane repair or replacement
  • Organize, guide, and direct work crews, offering clear communication and instruction
  • Assist other trades as needed to support overall departmental operations
  • Perform lifting duties up to 30 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.

Minimum Experience/Education:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform journey level commercial work as brick and concrete masons as well as landscape construction tasks including grading and earth work,
  • Ability to climb ladders, work on top of university buildings.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public.
  • Must be able to understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Journey-level skill in commercial brick and concrete masonry, including advanced knowledge of masonry, concrete finishing, and asphalt repair techniques
  • Skilled in landscape construction, including grading and earth work and the operation of associated equipment such as skid steers, trenchers, and compactors
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, project plans, and preparing accurate material estimates
  • Proven ability to lead small crews effectively, providing direction and ensuring high-quality work and safety compliance
  • Demonstrated experience working in a commercial setting relevant to the required construction trades

Required license or certification:

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
