CU Innovations has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Licensing Associate position.

Department Summary: CU Innovations is a catalyst for innovation on the Anschutz Medical Campus focused on improving the lives of patients and the healthcare system. Our mission is to facilitate the rapid transfer of breakthrough inventions to society using a multidisciplinary team approach. We combine expertise in business, science, and law in support of researchers and clinicians at CU Anschutz & Denver, UCHealth, Children's Hospital, and Denver Health, as they discover and develop breakthrough technologies including new treatment options, medical devices, and care pathways. We connect researchers, clinicians and staff with external industry partners to accelerate innovation and translation to patient impact. Our team provides support and guidance in intellectual property, licensing, industry outreach, venture funding, startup formation, and more.

Job Summary: Jobs in this career family provide general business operations of the organization or a combination of operational responsibilities covering multiple career families. Functions include institutional research, statistical analysis, policy development and review, strategic planning and broad unit business operations such as parking and transportation services, risk management, childcare services, real estate and property management, retail services or job responsibilities that combine fiscal, HR and operational management responsibilities.

Nature of Work:
  • Licensing Associates are part of a committed team of licensing professionals within the CU Innovations team. As part of the team, Licensing Associates evaluate, advance, partner and commercialize a portfolio of University intellectual property in the health sciences, including therapeutics, medical devices, diagnostics, biological materials, care pathways, and digital health.
  • Licensing Associates partner with more senior members of the licensing team as they develop their skills working with inventors to understand technologies, outside counsel to assess patentability, and industry colleagues to commercialize inventions.
  • Licensing Associates partner with the Venture/Licensing Fellows and the Business Development team to develop marketing strategies, identify potential licensees, and contacts within companies as they commercialize University assets.
  • Licensing Associates will continue to build their intellectual property commercialization skills:
    • understanding and assessing the intellectual assets developed in a faculty member's lab
    • encouraging disclosure of new ideas, inventions and other intellectual assets to CU Innovations
    • assessing new inventions for technical merit, patentability, and commercial feasibility
    • overseeing the filing and prosecution of patent applications where appropriate
    • identifying and communicating with potential licensees and marketing technologies to industry
    • negotiating, drafting and enforcing options, licenses, IIAs and other agreements.
  • Licensing Associates will continue to build the confidence and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with very senior, high-level faculty, staff, and executives in the business community.
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Initially, the Licensing Associate will lead and manage the development and commercialization of the biological materials portfolio.
    • Maintain and expand outreach to University scientists and cores for biological materials
    • Maintain and expand the network of industry connections for licensing biological materials
    • Negotiate and enter into revenue bearing agreements for biological materials with industry partners
    • Maintain and update the database of biological materials and license agreements
  • During this time, the Licensing Associate will have the opportunity to partner with more experienced members of the Licensing Team and build their intellectual property commercialization skills. The expectation is that the Licensing Associate will transition to take responsibility for a portfolio including a greater breadth of assets with the following responsibilities:
    • Evaluate and analyze new invention disclosures, meet with inventor(s), assess patentability and marketability, and identify relevant industry contacts.
    • Encourage the commercialization of innovation through industry collaborations, licensing or the formation of start-up companies.
    • Develop licensing strategies, identify potential licensees, negotiate terms, draft agreements, and close deals.
    • Manage patent-related activities, including the filing and prosecution of patent applications.
    • Participate in educational programs aimed at the university community relating to intellectual property issues, innovation and commercialization.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in life, health, engineering, or physical sciences, or in law or business with relevant knowledge of biological/life sciences.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in understanding healthcare related inventions, in areas such as therapeutics, medical devices, biological materials, diagnostics, and digital health.
Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in life, health, engineering, physical sciences, law or business.
  • 1+ years professional experience including the development, preparation, negotiation, review, and execution of a wide range of licenses.
  • Pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostic, and/or health IT commercialization experience including technology review, patent protection (as appropriate), FDA approval process, reimbursement, and negotiation.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property protection methods, licensing practices, contract law, as well as government laws/regulations relating to technology transfer within industry and/or academia.
Competencies:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, including complex scientific concepts.
  • Ability to interact effectively in both academic and corporate cultures with scientists, research sponsors, industry representatives and patent attorneys.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Team player and builder; works well individually and in group environments; shares knowledge, expertise; provides assistance and accepts additional responsibility when necessary.
  • Commitment to values and strong business ethics including outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advance diversity and inclusion.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $55,357-$77,500.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
