The School of Medicine's Department of Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Research Services Entry Laboratory Science Professional.

Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities. Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Professionals at the entry level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. At the entry level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and are performed in a training and development capacity.

Nature of Work

Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential "wet" hazards. Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed.

The International Melanoma Biorepository research laboratory has a collection of over 5000 tumor or blood samples from patients with melanoma and other skin cancers; provides clinically annotated patient samples, as well as other labs worldwide. Samples include tumor tissue, blood, cell lines, and xenograft animal models. The manager of the cutaneous oncology tissue bank will oversee operations pertaining to the Skin Cancer Biorepository including identifying patients who may provide specimens, obtaining consent, collection of samples including, but not limited to blood, tissue, and other body fluids. The manager will maintain the database associated with specimens and will assist in the preparation of specimens for storage and production of DNA, RNA and serum. This person will spend time in the Cutaneous Oncology Clinic in the University Hospital and in the research laboratories at the University of Colorado AMC.

Specific duties include consenting eligible patients for studies, shipment of materials, performing routine follow-up blood draws, and providing clinical information for data analysis. This professional will convene, and maintain records, of weekly Scientific Advisory Committee meetings and will assist in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and quarterly reports of the bank activities. This tissue bank is an integral part of the cutaneous oncology research laboratory (Dr. William Robinson MD/PhD, primary investigator). Our main research projects include multi-platform next generation molecular studies (microbiome, whole exome/genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, FISH, proteomics) of patient tumor and matched normal samples. This professional will support such research projects by identifying patients suited for our laboratory studies, requesting samples from other departments or institutions, and overall serve as liaison between the hospital and laboratory personnel.

Experienced Phlebotomist /Clinical Research Coordinators preferred are highly encouraged to apply.

Examples of Duties Performed
  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
    • Serves as a liaison between the biorepository and other departments
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
    • In charge of outside materials such as slides and FFPE blocks within the laboratory
  • Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as needed
    • Transports blood and/or tissue samples from the clinic to the melanoma research laboratory
    • Assists in the preparation of specimens for study including preparation of serum, DNA from tissues and cells for culture
    • Maintains records of specimen collection, storage, use and transfer
    • Assures that all samples are barcoded, entered in the database, and properly stored
    • Reviews requests for specimens from other investigators and presents these to the Scientific Advisory Board for their review. Organizes and ships samples to other investigators
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab
  • Two years of clinical research experience (oncology preferred)
  • Experience with molecular or immunology lab techniques
  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Previous oncology experience
Competencies, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
    • Knowledge of basic laboratory skills including sterile technique, specimen preparation, handling and storage
  • Understanding of basic molecular biology and ability to interpret basic data
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information
  • Proficient daily use with MS Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and Viper including internet and electronic mail capabilities for University of Colorado business only.
  • Possess knowledge of Good Clinical Practices, FDA Rules and Regulations, NIH guidelines, ICH guidelines and HIPAA regulations in relation to clinical trials.
  • Knowledge of basic Human Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Terminology.
Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $40,280 to $51,236.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
