Essential Job Duties:
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Equine Emergency Clinician to join our dedicated team. This position offers a unique blend of clinical practice, teaching, and community outreach within a dynamic academic environment. The successful candidate will play a critical role in managing primary emergency cases and training the next generation of equine practitioners.

Primary Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Provide diagnosis and management of primary equine emergency cases, leveraging in-depth knowledge and experience.
  • Evaluate and treat primary emergency cases with scheduling flexibility based on clinician availability.
  • Maintain primary case responsibility for ambulatory primary emergency cases, utilizing consultation and referral options as needed for intense or severe cases.
  • Provide emergency expertise and ensure effective, collegial communication and collaboration with internal services.
Teaching and Training
  • Teach students and house officers emergency triage, diagnosis, and treatment while managing primary emergency cases.
  • Attend and actively contribute to student and house officer rounds.
  • Participate in regular emergency service meetings.
  • Work closely with curriculum leaders as a content expert for the equine handling, safety, and general skills portion of the curriculum.
  • Be responsible for student and house officer training.
University/Community Outreach
  • Schedule and conduct bi-annual meetings and informal practice visits with subscribing practitioners to foster strong program relationships.
  • Be responsible for collaborating and communicating with referring veterinarians of the subscribing practices, which includes university and community outreach efforts.

Other Work/Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Experience/Education:

  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty license) in North Carolina also required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be enthusiastic about equine ambulatory emergency and teaching and have a DVM, and prior relevant equine emergency experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and management of primary equine emergency cases are essential.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students and house officers.
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills are required for working with internal services and external practitioners.
  • Ability to manage a primary emergency caseload and effectively utilize referral/consultation support.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An equine internship and/or 1-3 years of experience with equine ambulatory practice, including emergency case experience is preferred.

Required License or Certification:

  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty license) in the State of NC.
