Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor of Counseling (Possible Department Chair Position)

The Department of Counselor, Leadership, and Special Education at Auburn University at Montgomery invites applications for a tenure track position in Counseling at the Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor level to begin Fall 2026 or until filled. This position is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position.Highly qualified applicants may be considered for Department Chair of Counseling, Leadership, and Special Education position as part of the interview process. The Chair position is a 12-month, full-time position with a reduced teaching load.
The Department of Counseling, Leadership, and Special Education offers undergraduate programs in special education and graduate programs in counseling, leadership, and special education. In particular, the Counselor Education Program area includes two CACREP accredited programs: the master's programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling, as well as the Education Specialist programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. A new concentration of Counseling Education within our Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program will started in Fall 2025. Required Qualifications for the Faculty Position. The successful candidate must have:
1. an earned doctoral degree in Counselor Education (Clinical Mental Health Counseling focus) from a CACREP accredited program;
2. demonstrated experience and/or potential in administration and/or leadership in higher education;
3. eligible to hold the rank of Assistant, Associate Professor, or Professor;
4. three years of full-time or equivalent clinical experience and additional experience as a clinical supervisor;
5. evidence of counseling, supervision, and teaching experience in counselor education;
6. evidence of the ability to maintain a record of high-quality research and scholarship;
7. evidence of the ability to engage in professional service, leadership, and advocacy;
evidence of the ability to engage in the integration of advocacy and ethical practice into the preparation of counseling professionals;
8. experience teaching in traditional and online instructional methods;
9. evidence of the ability to lead recruitment and retention activities;
10. must hold or be eligible for certification and licensure in the State of Alabama,
11. evidence of sustained memberships in professional counseling organizations, and;
12. professional development and renewal activities related to counseling
For candidates interested in the Department Chair position, the successful candidate must have:
1. demonstrated experience in administration and/or leadership;
2. administrative and professional experiences related to clinical mental health counseling;
3. experience in counselor education curriculum evaluation and program development;
4. experience or familiarity with the CACREP accreditation process;
5. credentialing for counseling supervision by the state board or eligibility for supervision credentialing by the state board is highly desired;
6. extensive demonstrated field experience post degree is highly desired, and;
7. grant writing experience.
The department chair's key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- encouraging and supporting good teaching, scholarly activity, and professional development within the department,
- planning and executing a strategic direction for the department, building and staffing the schedule of classes, overseeing the department budget and other resources, fostering team building, managing the department and its staff, working with diverse faculty and students in the department and across campus to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and fostering and maintaining collaborative relationships with external entities,
- communicating and implementing college and university policies to the department, and advocating for departmental needs to the college and university,
- working with the faculty to develop and review standards, curricula, and procedures, which provide adequate preparation of graduates for professional or further academic endeavor, and
- leading student recruitment and retention efforts and ensuring department majors are appropriately advised.
