Position Description
This position is responsible for the planning and organizing of work of journeyperson in an assigned trade, the development of material and labor estimates for proposed work, as well as the assigned trade shop budget, inventories, procedures and policies. Work is primarily evaluated for effective use of resources, accomplishment of assigned projects, and adherence to trade standards.

About the Department and/or College


Major/Essential Functions
  • Provide operational control, leadership, and management of the Carpenter Shop work center, including structural/construction operations, maintenance, renovations, and new construction projects.
  • Plan, schedule, and assign weekly work in accordance with established priorities; monitor work site operations through regular inspections and site visits.
  • Establish short- and long-range goals for the work center and maintain accurate, up-to-date operational data (including E&G building roof data).
  • Review construction project plans, evaluate material requirements, prepare cost estimates, and requisition materials from warehouse or external vendors.
  • Advise Unit Manager and Assistant Director on project status, operational challenges, and recommended solutions; identify inefficiencies and implement corrective actions.
  • Supervise administrative and personnel functions within the work center, including performance evaluations, attendance reporting, and initiation of disciplinary actions.
  • Train and mentor personnel, including apprentices and temporary laborers, on job-related maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies, governmental codes, regulations, and institutional procedures; conduct safety inspections and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, and technical studies; provide subject matter expertise to Engineering Services and project managers.
  • Maintain vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials in safe and orderly condition; operate and secure assigned vehicles and work areas.
  • Participate in emergency call-back rotation and provide after-hours or overtime support as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Unit Managers or Assistant Director.


Required Qualifications
Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reflected in the completion of high school or equivalent. Three years experience as a licensed journeyperson in the assigned trade; or six years experience in designated trade. Job-related vocational training and other education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. Thorough knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the assigned trade.

This position requires eligibility to drive TTU vehicles, including a valid U.S. driver license and two years of driving experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the Construction/Carpentry trade.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory experience within the trade.
  • Completion of technical training courses in structural/construction, carpentry, and all types of roof repair.



Pay Range
$25.91 - $33.70 - $41.44
