Sterilization and Laboratory Support Services Technician

Job Description

Supports the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) research mission by cleaning and sterilizing laboratory and animal care equipment, producing distilled and deionized water, and decontaminating infectious materials. This position is primarily housed in the Integrated Life Sciences Building (ILSB) and supports Sterilization and Laboratory Support Services operations. The position may rotate to other nearby facilities as operational needs require. Responsibilities include providing routine laboratory support services and assisting with assigned projects under the direction of the Research Operations Manager. Duties and responsibilities may be reviewed and adjusted based on programmatic and operational needs.

Required Qualifications

Previous experience in a lab environment; adaptable and willing to learn autoclaves and related equipment, ability to keep accurate records and to interpret verbal and written instructions; good interpersonal skills since this position will involve interaction with faculty, staff, and students; ability to follow standard operating procedures for cleaning and decontamination; ability to recognize equipment problems and notify repair service in the absence of the supervisor; order supplies as needed, assist ability to work independently or with a team at different locations; ability to organize workload and adapt to schedule changes.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience cleaning laboratory glassware using commercial washers; previous experience sterilizing and decontaminating items using sterilizers; working knowledge of academic research labs; working knowledge of aseptic techniques is beneficial.
