Department Summary

Supervise the day-to-day operations of groundskeepers at Facilities Management.

Duties include:

Direct, manage, and lead the overall operation of the groundskeeping staff for assigned areas.Evaluate, develop, and implement necessary cultural practices for turf, woody material, and trees throughout the assigned area.Accountable for training, performance management, coaching, mentoring, and technical expertise of staff.Comply with all laws, University policies and procedures, safety regulations, and Collective Bargaining agreement.Manage and maintain records and data entry related to payroll and work orders for assigned employees. All other duties as may be assigned.The position will oversee 5 to 15 full-time bargaining unit employees and up to 5 student employees. A successful candidate must possess a valid Ohio Driver's License.


Position Profile

Plans, organizes, coordinates, and performs landscaping activities on campus. Includes gardening, planting, landscape and grounds maintenance, erosion, and pest control. Ensures the upkeep and functionality of grounds to provide a conducive and safe environment for students, staff, and faculty.

Level Summary

Manages a work unit or a team and has full authority over personnel actions within the work unit. Contributes to the development of the area's operational plan, ensuring alignment with broader departmental or institutional goals. Accountable for the achievement of the unit's operational objectives, improving performance and addressing resource needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages a medium-sized team. Directly oversees at least 2.0 FTE employees or one or more supervisors. Has authority to hire, transfer, suspend, promote, manage performance, discharge, assign duties, reward, and discipline employees.

Fiscal Responsibilities

Responsible for managing team or department budgets and resources.

Problem Solving

Addresses departmental or cross-team issues, devises long-term solutions.

Independence of Action

Acts independently, with consultation with senior management.

Communication and Collaboration

Facilitates communication among team and higher-level leadership, builds relationships across University.

Physical Requirements

This role requires a range of physical activities, including sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, crawling, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting, pulling, and performing repetitive tasks with both hands, including overhead work. Normal (or correctable) vision and hearing are required, and certain positions may also require color vision and a functional sense of smell.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field, 5 or more years of related professional experience, and 3 or more years of supervisory experience, or equivalent education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

In lieu of Bachelor's degree the following education/experience will also be considered:
  • High School Diploma or GED plus 9 years of related experience.
  • Associate's Degree plus 7 years of related experience.

Pay Rate: The target salary range for this position is Pay Grade 18 - $58,972 to $78,139, commensurate with the selected candidate's education and experience while considering internal equity.
