Department Summary

The Director of Sports Medicine leads comprehensive healthcare, prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of student athlete injuries. The director manages sports medicine staff, oversees athletic training operations, sets department policies, ensures compliance with medical regulations and acts as the key liaison between coaches, athletes, and physicians.

Representative Duties:


Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Administers and oversees the care, prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to all student-athletes.
  • Provides specific clinical care as assigned.
  • Manages and supervises sports medicine staff.
  • Organizes and maintains all medical records in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Develops and maintains emergency action plans for all permanent and temporary practice and competition venues in accordance with university risk management guidelines and state regulations.
  • Develops and maintains all department guidelines, policy and procedure in accordance with national/international best practices and consensus statements.
  • Coordinates the purchasing and use of all equipment and supplies needed for the operation of the athletic training facility, in accordance with State and University policies.
  • Plans and coordinates physical examinations and screenings.
  • Communicate with physicians and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes.
  • Makes appropriate physician's referrals and appointments.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA and conference should be maintained, reviewed and practiced ensuring compliance relative to those applicable duties
Position Profile

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:

Provides athletic training support to student athletes. Provides athletes with injury prevention training, and evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

Contributes to divisional or departmental operational plans by aligning unit goals with broader institutional strategies. Accountable for meeting short-term objectives and driving continuous improvement.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages a large team or multiple teams. Directly oversees at least 2.0 FTE employees or one or more supervisors. Has authority to hire, transfer, suspend, promote, manage performance, discharge, assign duties, reward, and discipline employees.

Fiscal Responsibilities

Oversees large budgets, including departmental and program-level budgets.

Problem Solving

Solves strategic, organizational problems and ensures continuous improvement.

Independence of Action

High degree of autonomy in decision-making, accountable for large areas.

Communication and Collaboration

Collaborates with executive leadership and external partners to drive organizational goals.

Physical Requirements

This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Master's degree in a related field, 8 or more years of related professional experience, and 5 or more years of supervisory experience, or equivalent education and experience.

Healthcare professionals must hold, or be eligible for, appropriate licensure as required by position.
