Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia is a public land grant institution of higher learning dedicated to providing quality, career focused undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and credentials needed to launch, enhance, or change careers.

Incumbents must manage lab inventory, lab equipment, maintain the overall condition of the labs, prepare labs for all assigned lab classes and hours as determined by semester course schedule; Incumbents will be required to prepare lab group settings for students to conduct experiments, using lab safety policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Prepare materials and assemble, disassemble, clean and store equipment needed for individual and group laboratory experiments for labs being conducted in the program, which include: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Food Science, Nutrition and/ or Integrated Science labs or any other labs for other affiliated courses in the department.
  2. Schedule preparation of lab experiments.
  3. Store and dispose of hazardous wastes using safety procedures.
  4. Assist in informing faculty and staff of proper hazardous waste disposal procedures.
  5. Monitor the regular inspection of lab equipment
  6. Maintain Safety Data Sheets in an organized, accessible fashion.
  7. Enforce lab safety codes in all science lab areas to assure student and employee safety.
  8. Communicate with science faculty regarding special needs and maintenance of laboratory facilities.
  9. Maintain inventory system of all science supplies and special equipment
  10. Coordinate purchasing of all science supplies and special equipment with division director.
  11. Coordinate maintenance of laboratory equipment (service or replace).
  12. Make appropriate recommendations for cost effective utilization of allocated resources.
  13. Maintain a reference library of scientific catalogs, instruction manuals, keys, troubleshooting guides, and operation and parts manuals for laboratory equipment and models as requested.
  14. Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Assist with supervision of student workers.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Biosciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Food Science, Food Nutrition, Microbiology, Physics, or in any of the related courses.
  • Prior laboratory work experience or must demonstrate evidence of having sound laboratory skills in the subject area, and/or corporate/industry training
