Community Safety Officer
Job Summary:
This position performs community safety work to protect life and property throughout the college by
following established procedures. This position reports to a Community Safety Manager under the Division for Student Life, and works on campus interfacing with faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
The Community Safety team fulfills campus safety and security needs by providing a wide range of services, including overseeing emergency preparedness, assisting students, responding to reports of medical and mental health emergencies, reacting to fire and other alarms, and many more supportive services for the campus community. At Reed, Community Safety Officer responsibilities begin with connecting with students, staff, and faculty as community partners. While we receive training typical of traditional security staff, we emphasize service to the community and collaboration across the college.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
We train all new hires on the job through our two-month Field Training Evaluation Program, with extensive, ongoing in-service training. Successful candidates come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We also provide on-going training to expand employee knowledge, capability, and satisfaction.

Work Schedule:
This is a full-time position scheduled to work 40 hours per week with a 30 minute unpaid meal break. Typical shifts include days (6:30am-3:00pm), swing (2:30pm-11:00), and nights (10:30-7:00). Available shifts will be discussed during the interview process. There may be times when you are asked to work a shift not normally on your schedule. Overtime opportunities are available as needed and especially for special events on campus.
Salary:
Starting base pay is $21.82 per hour, plus an additional swing shift differential for qualifying shifts (swing $.75/hr and nights $1.25/hr). Staring salary adjustments may be considered based on relevant experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide customer service to students, staff, faculty, and the general public
- Conduct campus patrols of interior and exterior spaces, security and safety checks to ensure a safe environment
- Enforce campus policies and state and local laws as directed
- Identifies safety hazards and assists first responders in hazardous material incidents
- Act as first responder and responds to fire and medical emergencies, and provides crisis intervention in conflict or emergency situations
- Perform required testing or inspection of safety and security equipment including cameras and mass notification systems to ensure proper working conditions
- Prepare incident, special, and medical reports for college and law enforcement use as necessary. Maintain records and log books as required
- Participate in disaster preparation drills and evaluations
- Meet and maintain eligibility requirements to operate a Reed College vehicle
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Provide in-person service, including providing Community Safety services, referring people to services provided by Residence Life, or referring people to other areas of the college as appropriate

- Continuously staff the dispatch area until relieved by a qualified Community Safety (CS) staff member
- Monitor and respond to communications systems, including phone calls, radio, text messages, emails, and the card access/alarm system
- Triage requests for service based on nature and urgency
- Request assistance from external emergency responders when necessary, including police, fire, and emergency medical services
- Coordinate the communications and actions of CS field staff, including coordinating assistance by external responders
- Ensure rapid dispatch of field staff to critical life/safety alarms or reports, including for fire alarms, the nuclear reactor, live animal labs, duress alarms, and other critical infrastructure
- Maintain accurate records of service calls and other field activity through the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
- Create and assign incident reports to field staff as requested or necessary according to departmental directives

- Previous experience in customer service or personal care related role
- A valid driver license at time of hire
- Ability to be DPSST certified as a Private Security Professional in Oregon (we will facilitate this training once hired)
- Experience in customer service
- Must be comfortable driving a vehicle in emergency situations
- Previous law enforcement, military, security, or related experience
- Previous experience working at an Institution of Higher Education
