Department Summary

The Early Childhood Assistant Teacher works with an Assistant Professor of Instruction/ Early Childhood Teacher in a classroom teaching and caring for the daily needs and education of young children. They model appropriate practice for ECEE Teacher Candidates and communicate about the classroom and children. They build relationships with families and communicate with them daily.
  • Teach and care for young children following developmentally appropriate practices, Early Learning Content Standards and licensing rules. Plan and coordinate activities to meet children's developmental and educational needs. Model appropriate practices for ECEE Teacher Candidates.
  • Full responsibility of the classroom for 2 hours per day and any time in the absence of the Assistant Professor of Instruction (Teacher). This includes planning and implementing classroom routines and activities as well as communication with families and ECEE Teacher Candidates.
  • Beyond working directly with children, they share responsibilities with Assistant Professor of Instruction to complete documentation for licensing and accreditation. They support the Assistant Professor of Instruction with curriculum, twice-yearly family teacher conferences and reports and may work on other classroom or Center needs aligning with their interests and skills. They also are responsible for completing required licensing training and participating in ongoing professional development as determined by the Center director.

Performs professional-level work that involves basic, operational problem-solving. Independently resolves day-to-day issues and executes clearly defined tasks. Provides data analysis and informational insights to support decision-making.

None; may assist with training student employees.

Fiscal Responsibilities

No budgetary responsibility. May be responsible for validating transactions.

Solves routine problems with defined processes and guidance.

Independence of Action

Works under close supervision.

Communication and Collaboration

Collaborates with peers and follows guidance from supervisor.

Physical Requirements

This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field and less than 3 years of related professional experience, or equivalent education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Reggio Emilia inspired work, emergent curriculum, and nature
