The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative Southwest Virginia (CCI SWVA) seeks a Communications Specialist. The specialist will plan, coordinate, and implement marketing and communications activities in support of the vision and strategic directions of CCI SWVA.
The Communication Specialist position will report to the Program Manager of CCI SWVA for priorities and assignments with a dotted line reporting structure to the Director for Marketing and Communications in the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation for mentorship and communication guidance. This position is responsible for managing and coordinating all communication and marketing responsibilities for CCI SWVA. The position will include the following functions: working closely with faculty to write content for VT News, media releases, periodic newsletter and annual reports including news stories on CCI SWVA research, innovation and talent pipeline programs, faculty and students; collaborating with colleagues from University Relations at Virginia Tech and across the CCI network to enhance the reputation of and build support for CCI SWVA's programs; creation and maintenance of the CCI SWVA website and social media platforms (including updating and enhancing material routinely, overseeing the management, organization, and structure of the public content across all media and ensuring compliance with university brand standards); providing publicity for speaker series and other CCI SWVA events; coordination of CCI SWVA communication with the CCI Hub and the other institutions within the CCI network, ensuring all the CCI SWVA contacts are informed of all CCI initiatives and activities.
The ideal candidate is internally motivated and passionate about contributing to a mission-focused organization, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team; has a comprehensive skill set and a demonstrated track record of working with a variety of stakeholders; is comfortable with communicating technical content. Finalists may be asked to produce writing samples as part of the interview process.
The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) is a state-funded higher education effort to promote cybersecurity research, innovation, talent development, and technology commercialization. CCI Southwest Virginia (CCI SWVA), one of four regional nodes, is led by Virginia Tech and consists of five universities, eight community colleges, and many industry partners. The CCI Hub in Arlington, also directed by Virginia Tech, coordinates the network.
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English or a related field
- Experience preparing and executing communications campaigns
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Evidence of effective communication across a variety of platforms
- Demonstrated record of professional communications with a broad audience through various forms of media
- Digital skills, such as proficiency with website maintenance, content management systems, social media tools, and marketing
- Self-motivation, detail-orientation, and proven ability to manage multiple and competing priorities based on workflow and deadlines
- Experience in communications and outreach around emerging technologies
- Demonstrated ability to work productively with a variety of stakeholders in academia, industry, and government
- Experience publicizing events or organizations
- Knowledge of html and other web programming tools
- Experience with photography and videography
- Graphic design background
