Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Planning Resources in the Harvard Planning Office (HPO), this position is responsible for managing the University's administrative geographic information system. This position in coordination with the spatial information systems developer establishes a vision for the further development of GIS data sets, information infrastructure, and related products by considering client needs and industry trends in collaboration with peers and clients.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

The GIS Manager:
  • Coordinates with clients to produce data, narratives, physical and online maps, and graphics of infrastructure, buildings, landscape, and other assets needed for physical planning, facility operations, and wayfinding by the Harvard community.
  • Leads data development and implements data standards, policies, and guidelines for data management,
  • Provides both routine and special analyses and mapping services to demonstrate how Harvard assets are impacted by time, environment, occupancy, and development
  • Works with the Spatial Information System Developer to ensure that the server infrastructure, ESRI Enterprise, and ESRI Indoors meets the needs of the GIS group and clients.
  • Maintains contact with ESRI, vendors, and municipal GIS departments to support data development, services, and evaluate industry trends.
  • Supervises one full-time GIS professional. Responsibilities include goal setting and performance management.
Basic Qualifications

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
  • BS/BA with a concentration in planning, geography, engineering, or related field required
  • Minimum of 6 years GIS experience
  • Supervisory experience required
  • Significant experience with data development, GIS solutions, and GIS management using the ESRI Enterprise environment, particularly current versions of ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro
  • Experience managing technical staff and projects
  • Must be proficient with the MS Office suite of applications
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Ability to work independently and communicate effectively orally and in writing, customer service mindset and problem-solving and analytical skills, and demonstrated ability to work and to lead in a team-oriented and collaborative environment are desirable. Knowledge of relational databases, JavaScript, Python, ESRI Indoors, ESRI 3D software (ArcPro, CityEngine), AGOL, FME, Adobe products, Sketchup, processing Lidar data, and Windows Server and IIS is desirable, as is data management and project management experience. Experience with real estate, planning, construction, and/or municipal work are helpful.

PLEASE NOTE: During the current period of Covid-19 related restrictions, this position may start as a remote position, with the transition to onsite in Cambridge when the office reopens.
