The Department of Cellular & Molecular Medicine (CMM) in the College of Medicine - Tucson seeks energetic, innovative individuals to apply for the position of Associate Department Head for Education. Competitive candidates will be eligible for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level. The Associate Head will assist the Department Head in fostering an environment that values and promotes the department's education mission, including serving as the chief departmental advocate for investment and improvement in CMM's various graduate (in collaboration with CMM's graduate program director) and undergraduate programs as well as partner institutions in other countries. The Associate Head will also coordinate CMM's contributions to the medical school curriculum. Department administrative staff will provide support to the Associate Department Head. As an Associate/Full Professor of Cellular & Molecular Medicine, the incumbent, in addition to taking an active role in teaching graduate and medical students, will conduct scholarly work in education, to include keeping abreast of best practices in education, as well as engaging in novel curriculum development and evaluation in collaboration with UA faculty and the larger education community nationally and internationally. The incumbent will also participate in Departmental and College of Medicine - Tucson (COM-T) service initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Coordinate and lead the implementation of the complex education mission of the Department as articulated by the Department Head.
- Provide oversight, support, direction, coaching, development, and empowerment to faculty across all of CMM's education programs.Assist faculty with new course design and development.
- Advise the Department Head on education mission priorities, funding needs, recruitment, and infrastructure support for these programs.
- Work with the Department Administrator to develop and maintain annual operating budgets for all education programs.
- Interact with the College of Medicine, Graduate College, UA Global, and other institutional education and administrative leaders at UArizona to manage and promote CMM's education programs and initiatives.
- Develop education program evaluation processes and metrics for the purposes of assessment, improvement, and planning.
- Ensure that our education programs function consistently with our department values, especially in the area of diversity and inclusion.
- Coordinate CMM's international education programs and training opportunities, including but not limited to CMM's Microcampus programs.
- Monitor and evaluate the education contributions of individual faculty members; encourage all faculty members to maintain an ongoing portfolio of education contributions for promotion and tenure purposes; and work with
- Department leadership to recognize outstanding teaching performance.
- Oversee faculty-development activities related to education, including faculty teaching effectiveness.
- Participate in and facilitate the recruitment of new faculty members, and orient them to roles and responsibilities in education and teaching; foster a culture of faculty involvement in the Department's education programs; and provide support and mentoring to faculty who have a specific interest in medical education and/or who are career educators.
- Participate fully and with distinction in graduate (doctoral and masters), medical, and online teaching, and advise students.
- Contribute to CMM's Microcampus partnerships by developing and teaching courses.
- Conduct scholarly work in education, to include keeping abreast of best practices in education, as well as engaging in novel curriculum development and evaluation in collaboration with UA faculty and the larger education community nationally and internationally.
- Participate in Departmental and College of Medicine - Tucson (COM-T) service initiatives.
- Participate on CMM committees and in Departmental events and meetings.
- Serve on and/or Chair CMM's Curriculum Committee, to help ensure the best possible planning, innovation, integration, and communication of education initiatives across programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Doctorate or Terminal degree, including MD, DO or PhD
- 10 years' experience teaching Histology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Embryology and/or Anatomy at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
- Documented record of productivity and innovation in biomedical education.
- Prior experience in leadership in higher education
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment
- Experience teaching Histology in a medical school curriculum and/or at the graduate level.
- State-of-the-art online teaching/curriculum development experience
