JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The College of Arts and Architecture is seeking a full-time Academic Adviser to be part of our advising team. This position serves on a team of advisers with the College Academic Advising Manager. The successful candidate will have a background in academic advising with a strong commitment to serving diverse student populations. Duties include providing academic advising to the School of Visual Arts and Department of Art History undergraduate students; assisting assigned advisees in resolving academic problems, making appropriate referrals, and maintaining confidential academic records; advising students in the selection of courses, concurrent major & minors, long-range planning and in navigating University policies. This position assists with undergraduate orientation, new student registration, change of campus student programs, and various recruitment events. The adviser also helps support and organize engagement activities for Arts & Architecture students including Early Welcome, Peer Mentoring, and Study Abroad. Further responsibilities include identifying and monitoring academic progress of student advisees and helping students with university systems including lionpath, starfish and canvas.
Qualifications typically include a Master's degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A graduate degree in higher education, student affairs, or counseling and/or academic advising experience is preferred. Competencies critical to success include attention to detail; excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking; comfort and competencies working within an environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion; demonstrated time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple responsibilities; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; problem-solving skills and mentality; adaptability to change; and most importantly, a passion for helping students succeed.
