Harvard's Financial Administration Department (FAD) is responsible for the stewardship of the University's finances, including related business processes and technology. FAD is dedicated to supporting the teaching and research mission of the University by providing outstanding financial services to the Harvard community; by providing support, guidance, and consultation; by working to ensure compliance with University and federal guidelines; by mitigating risk; and by promoting the financial health of the University.
Responsible for the support and ongoing enhancement of the University's Institutional Risk Management (IRM) program and for the advancement of risk management practices across the institution.
Risk Management and Audit Services (RMAS) is a department within Harvard University's Financial Administration that assists University management in identifying, managing, and mitigating risk by providing the following services: Financial, Operational, Compliance and Construction and Information Technology Audit, Enterprise Risk Management, Risk Strategy and Insurance, and Administration of the Anonymous Reporting Hotline.
The Associate Director of Risk and Compliance Services is responsible for providing leadership and direction for the IRM program and for the engagement of leadership in risk mitigation discussions. S/he is responsible for advancing the consideration of risk into planning and decision-making processes and will consult and influence risk committees established at various levels of the University. S/he creates and implements opportunities for sharing information about the risk management program, the consideration of risks inherent in the organization, and the promotion of risk management best practices to create a community of risk managers.
Additionally, the Associate Director is responsible for developing and implementing a compliance framework that leverages existing structures and organizations to support institutional compliance obligations. S/he develops and fosters close relationships with various stakeholders in central administration and in the Schools who manage compliance programs or who have a significant role in compliance efforts, to support the development of risk-based business practices and training for meeting compliance requirements.
The Associate Director is also responsible for managing the University's anonymous reporting hotline and developing programs to promote awareness and use of the mechanism.
The Associate Director will be responsible for other duties as required.
Typical Core Duties
- Responsible for effective staff management for a group or team of employees, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment
- Create, develop, and implement University Risk Management Program
- Direct the development and implementation of policies, procedures and training programs designed to ensure that the institution complies with all laws, regulations and government contract/grant requirements
- Establish and execute risk-based audit and compliance business plans to assess the adequacy of internal accounting and administrative control systems
- Ensure the institution's assets are properly safeguarded and accounted for and operations are in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and contract/grant provisions
- Support strategic planning discussions and manages change initiatives in the Risk Management and Audit Services department
- Manage quality assurance program in compliance with the rules established by the Institute of Internal auditors
- Collaborate with University-wide leadership to develop processes, policies and procedures
- Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations
- Master's degree or equivalent work experience required
- Minimum of 10 years' experience in a financial, compliance or audit role
- Supervisory experience
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, advanced excel skills
- Certified Public Auditor or Certified Public Accountant Preferred

If you accept our offer and join the team, your position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you will begin your work remotely. The remote nature of this job is only temporary, and all remote work must be performed within the United States. We currently expect that you will work remotely until Fall, 2021. Once the University and your supervisor determine that it is appropriate, you will be required to move your work location to the Cambridge campus or a state in which Harvard is registered as an employer as a condition of continued employment.
Financial Administration Department is currently developing hybrid workplace models which actively support remote work (within a Harvard registered state) where business and team needs allow.
