Why Host a Career Services Event
Most student veterans do not access career services resources. Colorado State University (CSU) and the University of Colorado Denver's CIBERVets are partnering to host a specialized student veteran career workshop to address this disconnect: 'Recruiting Tomorrow's Global Leaders from Today's Veterans.' This unique career workshop was created by student veterans for student veterans. Student veterans get the opportunity to engage directly with various industry experts. The workshop is open to veteran and active military students.

The virtual workshop features recruiters and business professionals with veteran-specific priorities and initiatives. Student veterans will choose which companies they want to meet with in small breakout rooms to learn more about the companies' opportunities and expectations including key skillsets, resume tips, open job opportunities, work environment, career advancement, etc.

Providing personalized career events for student veterans is one of the many contributing factors towards CSU earning second in the nation in the 2020 Military Times Best for Vets Ranking. We host job preparation and career networking events like this to give student veterans the opportunity to practice their socializing skills, elevator pitch, and get comfortable communicating with civilian employers.

Recruiters want to hire student veterans and are often willing to pay student veterans more than their traditional age graduating peers. Student veterans are the highest performing demographic on campuses around America. However, by the time a student veteran hears about job opportunities in newsletters, other candidates are often already through the first round of interviews.

Hosting A Successful Career Workshop
We follow a simple and winning formula showcasing how Colorado values veterans. First, we use a targeted marketing strategy for veteran-centered events. Who doesn't want to go to an event made specifically for them? We also empower student veterans to advertise the event to their networks. Student veterans are significantly more likely to attend if peers recommend the events to them personally. Second, we make the career workshop convenient for student veterans to attend. By hosting a virtual career workshop, the audience is not limited to one university or community college. Third, we promote regional collaboration by encouraging community colleges and universities to invite their student veterans to the virtual event. Fourth, we make positive relationships with employers across the state. And fifth, we describe the high caliber people employers could recruit from the student veteran population.

Building trust with student veterans, starts with convincing them you have their best interest in mind. Hosting a veteran-focused employer workshop event increases engagement in the student veteran community and helps them find quality employment before graduating.
