As a recent graduate of a Ph.D. program focusing on veteran issues of transition and reintegration, I became increasingly aware of the absence of veteran voices and perspectives in scholarly literature and higher education spaces. My experience as the only veteran student in a campus advisory group reinforced the disconnect between veterans and the decision-making process. To create a more inclusive higher education environment for veterans, it is crucial to recognize and empower their voices, stories, and experiences.

Informed Policy and Practice through Veteran Stories

Sharing veteran experiences can significantly impact policy and practice on campus. Administrators and faculty can develop more effective strategies to support non-traditional students by involving veterans in decision-making and acknowledging their unique challenges. To harness the full potential of their stories, it is vital to go beyond token representation and actively include veterans from all academic levels.

The power of veteran stories lies in their ability to shed light on the diverse challenges and opportunities of military service. When these narratives are incorporated into campus discussions, they can prompt critical self-reflection on assumptions and biases. This deeper understanding is essential for designing comprehensive support services that cater to the varying needs of this diverse population.

Strategies for Inclusivity

Create Support Networks: Purposefully develop and support veteran student organizations and veteran-specific advisors to provide social support, career guidance, and resources for veterans to adjust to campus life. Many colleges and universities have attempted to create such networks, but more intentional efforts are often required. The overall goal of these networks is to help student veterans stay connected, perform academically, and, most importantly, stay alive. Building strong support networks can involve personalized communication strategies to reach veterans and make them aware of available resources. Mentorship programs can pair veteran students with experienced mentors who understand their unique challenges. Activities and regular check-ins can foster a sense of belonging and well-being. Empowering student leadership within these networks and collaborating with other campus entities can strengthen the support system. Additionally, celebrating the achievements of veteran students and involving veteran alums in these networks can create a nurturing environment that promotes academic success and social integration.

Develop Flexible Academic Programs: Tailor educational programs to meet the unique needs of veterans, recognizing that their experiences and responsibilities differ from traditional students. Flexible academic programs can encompass a range of accommodations, such as offering online or evening classes to accommodate veterans' schedules. Granting credit for military training can recognize the skills and knowledge acquired during service, easing the transition into higher education. Personalized academic counseling can provide individualized guidance and support to veteran students, addressing their specific educational and career goals. It is essential to tailor flexibility to cater to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, as their experiences at various higher education levels vary significantly. By doing so, institutions can better support veteran students' academic journey and contribute to their success.

Increase Awareness and Understanding: Veterans face unique challenges in higher education, which can sometimes be problematic or overlooked. Many veteran students grapple with uncertainty related to family, financial issues, health, identity formation, and a loss of a sense of purpose. Campuses must recognize and address these challenges proactively. Collaborating with on-campus counseling services, seeking partnerships with local VA services, applying for grants, advocating for increased funding from higher education leadership, engaging veteran alums, and allocating student fees are all potential avenues for strengthening mental health support for veterans.

Empower Veterans: Empowerment is essential for veteran students to assert their agency, advocate for their needs, and foster understanding of their experiences among a wider audience. Creating platforms for veterans to share their stories can be a powerful means of empowerment. These platforms may include social media campaigns featuring videos and written testimonials, multimedia projects collaborating with media or art departments, and a campus podcast dedicated to veteran stories. Through storytelling, veterans can acknowledge and validate their unique experiences and challenges, particularly in a culture that may not always fully understand them. By providing diverse avenues for sharing their narratives, campuses can contribute to the broader understanding of veterans' journeys. Empowering veterans also involves recognizing their leadership potential and creating opportunities for them to take active roles in campus activities and organizations. By applying veterans in campus leadership positions and decision-making roles, institutions can benefit from their valuable perspectives and expertise.

Actively Involve Veterans

Inclusivity for veterans in higher education is not just about acknowledging their presence but actively involving them in shaping policies and practices. By amplifying veteran voices and experiences, campuses can develop comprehensive support services that address the diverse challenges these non-traditional students face.
