The Case for Strengthening Online Pathways at HBCUs

With the landscape of traditional education changing rapidly, educational institutions must embrace innovative methods and technologies to meet the diverse needs of contemporary learners. These institutions can better accommodate varying learning styles and increase student engagement by integrating digital learning platforms, personalized learning experiences, and flexible curricula. Amid these transformative shifts in education, it is essential to acknowledge those institutions that have historically adapted and thrived under challenging circumstances. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of American higher education, particularly for African American students. Their influence extends into various sectors, including a significant and enduring relationship with the United States military. There are multifaceted connections between HBCUs and the military, and this relationship has evolved and continues to impact both institutions.
In partnership with Kentucky State University (KSU), Magellan Learning Solutions is playing a pivotal role in improving the university’s remote education offerings. This initiative is a key step in KSU’s broader effort to modernize its academic infrastructure and meet the evolving needs of today’s diverse learners. According to Dr. Lee Beaumont, vice president of marketing and enrollment, the primary objective of this initiative is to elevate the overall student experience. This collaboration focuses on broadening access to high-quality online programs. It will also enhance the student’s journey from the moment of initial interest through enrollment, academic progression, and ultimately, graduation. Mike Floyd, associate vice president for online education, shared that one of the cornerstone efforts of this partnership is developing a concierge-style advising model. Under this approach, students are paired with a dedicated point of contact who guides them through critical steps such as completing the FAFSA, navigating tuition and payment options, and preparing for their first academic assignments. Once enrolled, students transition smoothly to their instructors and academic advisors, ensuring consistent support throughout their learning experience.
By leveraging strategic insights, Magellan is helping the university build a more engaging and student-centered online learning experience. These enhancements are especially impactful for military-affiliated students, who often face unique challenges balancing academic goals with service commitments. By expanding the range of remote program offerings, KSU creates more flexible, accessible pathways for service members, veterans, and their families to attain a high-quality education. This approach empowers them to advance their professional and personal development without compromising their duty to serve. This effort reinforces KSU’s commitment to excellence and highlights the powerful potential of strategic partnerships in reshaping the future of higher education. As the demand for flexible, accessible learning continues to grow, initiatives like this serve as a model for other institutions, particularly HBCUs, to follow. By investing in remote infrastructure, adopting military-friendly practices, and prioritizing the holistic student experience, HBCUs can expand their reach and better serve underserved populations, ultimately increasing enrollment and strengthening their long-term impact.
As an active-duty service member pursuing my doctorate, I explored several HBCUs to complete my educational journey. However, during my search, I found that many HBCUs did not offer a doctor of business administration (DBA) program. Of the few that did, most required in-person attendance or extended residency requirements ranging from 20 to 30 days. These formats are difficult to manage for active-duty service members, who often have demanding schedules and limited flexibility due to their professional obligations. While I remained committed to finding a program that aligned with my aspirations, these logistical challenges ultimately played a significant role in deciding where to enroll. This experience highlights a substantial opportunity for HBCUs nationwide: expanding online degree offerings and streamlining support systems tailored to military-affiliated students. By investing in flexible, fully online programs and adopting military-friendly enrollment processes, HBCUs can better serve this population without compromising their duty to serve. Doing so not only honors the longstanding connection between the military and HBCUs but also has the potential to significantly boost enrollment among service members, veterans, and their families. HBCUs should consider enhancing their online presence and student support models to meet the evolving needs of this growing population.
