Purpose, Support, and Community: Why Veterans Build Careers at Boston College

The Boston College (BC) military-connected community has seen significant growth and institutional investment in recent years. While our tradition of service dates back to WWI, we've moved beyond just symbols and memorials. On campus, you'll find the Veterans Memorial Wall, have the opportunity to stop by a Veterans Football Tailgate, and our students are involved in Army/Navy/Air Force ROTC programs, but the true culture is found in our holistic community spirit. In 2021, BC established its first full-time military-focused leadership position. Now in its fifth year, this office has helped double the number of student veterans and veteran faculty/staff on campus. We don't just host events; we build bridges. From the alumni-sponsored signature Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon, and 'Wreaths Across America' participation, to our 'BC Battle Buddies' program-which aims to educate non-military staff to foster cultural competency and improve communication with our military-affiliated community members-we ensure that those who served feel understood, not just 'thanked.'"
About The Military-Affiliated Workforce at Boston College
As a Jesuit, Catholic institution focused on holistic education, it's very important for us to value each member in our community and the unique skills, experiences, and knowledge they bring on campus. Our military and veteran workforce community includes 90 members. These employees are professors, custodial staff, police officers, facilities trades, administrators, etc. We are spread across campus in various capacities, but we all share a common bond. Not included in this number are the multiple military family members, spouses, children, etc. More efforts have been made in the past several years to connect with this group, including invitations to all of our programs, and a specific military family challenge coin and logo was created.
Why Work at Boston College
Boston College offers a robust benefits package designed to provide stability for military-affiliated families. We provide clearly outlined policies for military leave and deployments, ensuring that our Guard and Reserve members can serve without fearing for their civilian career.
Beyond the paperwork, we pride ourselves on individualized transition support. We work 1-on-1 with employees and supervisors to manage deployments or service-related challenges with empathy. Additionally, as an educational institution, our tuition benefits for employees and their families often serve as a life-changing resource for veterans looking to build a legacy for their children.

Continuing Your Passion for Service at Boston College
One major focus at a Jesuit institution is service and giving back to the community. This is a perfect environment for those getting out of the military and looking to continue to give to something greater than themselves through their work. Whether it's supporting students, helping educate the next generation of leaders, or making our environment safe and welcoming for others to thrive, our focus on service toward others is a priority on campus and a way to continue serving.
"I love coming to work each day. I get to talk with potential student veterans, connect with Alumni who want to network with the veterans on campus, or troubleshoot VA benefits or other issues with people on campus. My job is to be a one-stop resource for our military community, and I think that's a great privilege that I don't take for granted." -Mike Lorenz, Director of Military & Veteran Support, TSgt., Aircraft Armament Systems, USAF Veteran.
